What Is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen therapy is a gentle form of hands-on bodywork where cross-fibre stimulation of the soft tissue triggers the body’s own natural healing response. This helps to correct any imbalances within the body, thus providing the best conditions for repair and self-healing to take place.

The stimulus is made at specific locations on the body depending on the condition being treated. Throughout the session there are frequent resting times allowed for, which is an important part of the healing process, this allows for the body to begin responding to treatment.

The client is usually treated lying on a massage table and treatment is performed directly on skin or can be done through light clothing. Treatments are usually spaced about a week apart and often only 2 – 3 treatments are needed, depending on what is being addressed. For chronic conditions, more treatment may be required.

Bowen Therapy is very gentle in nature, and not only can this holistic therapy address the musculoskeletal system, but it can also stimulate the internal systems to function more efficiently. A general feeling of calmness is common throughout, or after the treatment.

Bowen Therapy was developed in the 1950’s by the late Tom Bowen (1916-1982) from Geelong, Australia, and began being taught in 1986. It is now taught and practiced worldwide.

At Lara Bowen Therapy my aim is to support the body in its ability to heal, within a safe and nurturing environment.
